In case you haven’t noticed, I’m Jewish. It’s cool with me, don’t worry, and I’m sure it’s cool with you.
So what do Jews do on Christmas? A few people have answered this recently, most suggest Chinese food. I looked up what the correlation between Jews and Chinese food is, because I too love Chinese food and doubt it has anything to do with a genetic predisposition the stereotype would suggest.
Funny story - I was directing a play in Madison, WI a few years ago. It was a Daniel Simon play (brother of the more famous Niel Simon) called Convertible Girl. It was about a Jewish guy dating a non-Jewish gal. She wanted to get married, he didn’t and said it was because of his religion. So she converts, falls in love with Judaism, which is good, because he still breaks up with her. Anyway, the guy I casted for the lead role was not Jewish (but he had a real Jew face). We would hang out after rehersals and I would generally order Chinese food. One day I apologized for constantly forcing him to eat Chinese and said, “I don’t know why, I just love it.” He said, “of course you do, you’re Jewish.” That’s when I found about this connection.
What’s the connection? Well apparently it has to do with 3 things, lot’s of noodle based dishes, a non -dairy cousin, and immigrant proximity on the Lower East side. Makes sense.
But what do I do with my Christmas. A nice Zabar’s brunch, complete with whitefish and smoked mozzarella (which are my favorites). Enjoy the holidays everyone.
While I haven’t been posting often, I have finally seemed to start blogging again. I’ve been blogging at the Designer Pages blog pretty regularly and have been enjoying it. I’m also working on setting up a blog for Ruby stuff. Stay tuned.
People are always talking about how awesome web videos are - how the next big thing is going to be this little site called YouTube. As someone who likes to stay ahead of the trends, I went and checked out this user-generated video site and a few like it and I was less then impressed. I have certain criteria for content and I guess I’d say that the thing that urks me the most is amateurism. Poorly produced, planned, lit, and just silly videos don’t do it for me. However, every now and then I stumble upon some independent content producers that are really great. I’m going to start linking to them. And the first one is…
These guys are hysterical. They work at ConnectedVentures (the guys behind CollegeHumor). Apparently I once watched a Lakers game with Amir at some party. I spent maybe 5 hrs a few nights ago watching all their videos. I highly recommend. Enjoy.
I’ll be giving a little talk about something I like to call Naked Functionality at the Mind Petals community meetup tomorrow. As always, it’ll be at the Gramstand Cafe, between 13th and 14th st on Ave. A, at 7pm. So come check it out.
“A little.” As I started writing this post, I asked myself, “Do I feel silly blogging?” Feelings, though, are sometimes best ignored.
Everything has to start somewhere and this is where this blog starts.
Part of the point of this blog is to improve my writing by practice, so hopefully this will be one of the worst posts. And it’s almost over, so I think that bodes well for the future.
I’m going to write about the Internet, entrepeneurship and business, developing websites, especially focused around Ruby on Rails and jQuery, and the general culture stuff, music and movies. Every now and then I might post some fiction or some totally random stuff. I hope you enjoy it.
